Mental disorders as risk factors: assessing the evidence for the global burden of disease study

Findings from the ongoing Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study are discussed by Baxter and colleagues who argue that further research is needed to confirm if mental disorders are risk factors for other diseases, and suggest criteria required for future study designs.
